Born in Kolkata, India, Parambrata hails from a family of filmmakers, with Ritwik Ghatak
being his great-granduncle. Both his parents, Satinath Chatterjee and Sunetra Ghatak, were film critics. He is the nephew of Mahasweta Devi, a renowned Bengali activist, and author. Parambrata was first enrolled at the Dolna Day School and later completed his schooling from Patha Bhavan. He obtained his Bachelor`s degree from Jadavpur University and holds a master`s degree in English Literature. The actor later traveled to the United Kingdom to pursue Master`s degree in Film and TV Production.
Parambrata was in a relationship with actress Swastika Mukherjee
. However, their relationship ended when Param began dating Ike Schouten, a Dutch doctor, whom he met in Bristol, where the former had gone to pursue a Master`s degree in Film and Television Production.
As an Actor
Parambrata made his film debut in 2002 with Umi Chakraborty`s Hemanter Pakhi. The following year he starred in Sandip Ray
`s Bombaiyer Bombete, which is based on the story written by the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray
. The movie, which also featured Sabyasachi Chakraborty
and Bibhu Bhattacharya
, went on to become a commercial hit. In the same year, he starred in Bhalo Theko, which marked Vidya Balan
`s film debut. Later, after acting in a few telefilms, Parambrata starred in two films in 2005 - Prabhat Roy`s Shubhodrishti and Sandip Ray`s Nishijapon.
The year 2006 turned out to be quite successful for Parambrata as he worked with some of the most acclaimed Bengali directors. He first appeared in the lead role opposite Raima Sen

. Following this, he was seen in the black and white movie, Dosar, directed by Rituparno Ghosh
, essaying the role of Bobby. The movie was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and also won several national accolades. His final release of the year was Mainak Bhaumik`s Aamra which also starred Jisshu Sengupta
and Nilanjana Sharma.
In 2007, he reprised his role as Topshe in Kailashey Kelenkari, a sequel to the 2003 movie Bombaiyer Bombete. That being his sole release of the year, Parambrata next made a guest appearance in the movie 10:10
(2008) directed by Arin Paul. In 2008, he teamed up with Sandip Ray yet again to reprise his role as Topshe in Tintorettor Jishu
, the sequel to Kailashey Kelenkari. In the next couple of years, he appeared in movies such as Brake Fail (2009), 033 (2009), and Thana Theke Aschi (2010).
In 2011, he essayed the role of chief detective Abhijit Pakrashi in Srijit Mukherji
`s psychological thriller Baishe Srabon. The movie, which is apparently inspired by the Hollywood movie Righteous Kill, received positive reviews and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Bengali films of 2011. The actor also received the Best Critic`s Choice Performance Award at the International Bangla Film Academy Awards. The following year Parambrata starred in Anik Dutta`s directorial debut Bhooter Bhabishyat
. The movie was well-received at the box office with positive critic reviews while The Indian Express called the film to be `one of the most intelligent and satiric comedies one has seen in a long time`. He further achieved success, making his Bollywood debut with Sujoy Ghosh`s Kahaani, which starred Vidya Balan in the lead role. The actor was highly praised for portraying the character of the police officer Satyoki "Rana" Sinha: Sujoy was much impressed by Parambrata`s performance in the 2006 movie The Bong Connection and hence decided to cast him.

The following year he portrayed the role of Rabindranath Tagore in the movie Kadambari
(2015), which is a biopic on Kadambari Devi, the sister-in-law of Rabindranath Tagore. Parambrata added another feather in his cap with the 2016 movie Cinemawala
which is a tribute to the single-screen cinema halls, which are becoming rare in India. The actor was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor - Bengali, while the film won five awards at the ceremony. In the same year, he was also seen in only his second Hindi movie, Traffic
