One of the most popular actors of Bengali cinema, Parambrata Chatterjee is known for his performance in movies such as Nishijapon (2005),Hemlock Society (2012), Apur Panchali (2014) and Cinemawala (2016). He gained wide recognition in 2012 for his portrayal of Satyoki "Rana" Sinha in Sujoy Ghosh`s Bollywood movie Kahaani. Predominantly working in the Bengali film industry, Parambrata began his acting career with Bengali television. The actor ventured into directing in 2011 with the movie Jiyo Kaka and received the Rituparno Ghosh memorial award for his second directorial venture Hawa Bodol (2013).

Early Life
Born in Kolkata, India, Parambrata hails from a family of filmmakers, with Ritwik Ghatak being his great-granduncle. Both his parents, Satinath Chatterjee and Sunetra Ghatak, were film critics. He is the nephew of Mahasweta Devi, a renowned Bengali activist, and author. Parambrata was first enrolled at the Dolna Day School and later completed his schooling from Patha Bhavan. He obtained his Bachelor`s degree from Jadavpur University and holds a master`s degree in English Literature. The actor later traveled to the United Kingdom to pursue Master`s degree in Film and TV Production.

Personal Life
Parambrata was in a relationship with actress Swastika Mukherjee. However, their relationship ended when Param began dating Ike Schouten, a Dutch doctor, whom he met in Bristol, where the former had gone to pursue a Master`s degree in Film and Television Production.

Movie Career
As an Actor
Parambrata made his film debut in 2002 with Umi Chakraborty`s Hemanter Pakhi. The following year he starred in Sandip Ray`s Bombaiyer Bombete, which is based on the story written by the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. The movie, which also featured Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Bibhu Bhattacharya, went on to become a commercial hit. In the same year, he starred in Bhalo Theko, which marked Vidya Balan`s film debut. Later, after acting in a few telefilms, Parambrata starred in two films in 2005 - Prabhat Roy`s Shubhodrishti and Sandip Ray`s Nishijapon.

The year 2006 turned out to be quite successful for Parambrata as he worked with some of the most acclaimed Bengali directors. He first appeared in the lead role opposite Raima Sen and Shayan Munshi in The Bong Connection directed by Anjan Dutt. Following this, he was seen in the black and white movie, Dosar, directed by Rituparno Ghosh, essaying the role of Bobby. The movie was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and also won several national accolades. His final release of the year was Mainak Bhaumik`s Aamra which also starred Jisshu Sengupta and Nilanjana Sharma.

In 2007, he reprised his role as Topshe in Kailashey Kelenkari, a sequel to the 2003 movie Bombaiyer Bombete. That being his sole release of the year, Parambrata next made a guest appearance in the movie 10:10 (2008) directed by Arin Paul. In 2008, he teamed up with Sandip Ray yet again to reprise his role as Topshe in Tintorettor Jishu, the sequel to Kailashey Kelenkari. In the next couple of years, he appeared in movies such as Brake Fail (2009), 033 (2009), and Thana Theke Aschi (2010).

In 2011, he essayed the role of chief detective Abhijit Pakrashi in Srijit Mukherji`s psychological thriller Baishe Srabon. The movie, which is apparently inspired by the Hollywood movie Righteous Kill, received positive reviews and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Bengali films of 2011. The actor also received the Best Critic`s Choice Performance Award at the International Bangla Film Academy Awards. The following year Parambrata starred in Anik Dutta`s directorial debut Bhooter Bhabishyat. The movie was well-received at the box office with positive critic reviews while The Indian Express called the film to be `one of the most intelligent and satiric comedies one has seen in a long time`. He further achieved success, making his Bollywood debut with Sujoy Ghosh`s Kahaani, which starred Vidya Balan in the lead role. The actor was highly praised for portraying the character of the police officer Satyoki "Rana" Sinha: Sujoy was much impressed by Parambrata`s performance in the 2006 movie The Bong Connection and hence decided to cast him.

Parambrata Chatterjee made his Bollywood debut with the film Kahaani (2012) that stars Vidya Balan in a lead role.The actor continued to deliver impressive performances, which was apparent after he received critical acclaim for his performance in Srijit Mukherji`s dark comedy Hemlock Society (2012). He went on to receive the Anandalok Award and the prestigious BFJA Award for Best Actor for his performance in the movie. His final release of 2012 was Teen Yaari Katha which was screened at the Kolkata Film Festival and the World Film Festival of Bangkok.

2013 saw the actor appear in three films - Maach Mishti & More, Hawa Bodol which he directed as well, and Proloy. Directed byRaj Chakraborty, the crime thriller, Proloy, became the second Bengali movie, after Kaal Madhumas (2013), to have an iOS and Android application released - which was part of the film`s promotion. The actor began 2014 with one of the most bizarre movies of Bengali cinema, Obhishopto Nighty directed by Birsa Dasgupta. Along with Paoli Dam who portrayed the character of Monica, Parambrata essayed the character of Aparesh in the movie which revolved around a cursed nightie. Although the performances of the actors were praised, the movie was criticized for its sluggish narrative. He next essayed the role of actor Subir Banerjee, who had portrayed the role of Apu in Satyajit Ray`s classic Pather Panchali (1955), in the movie Apur Panchali (2014). Directed by Kaushik Ganguly, the movie, based on the life of Subir, went on to receive several accolades.

In 2014, Parambrata made his English film debut with the movie Sold directed by the Academy Award-winner Jeffrey D. Brown. The movie that showcases the story of a girl who is a victim of human trafficking starred Niyar Saikia, Gillian Anderson, David Arquette, Seema Biswas, and Sushmita Mukherjee. The following year he portrayed the role of Rabindranath Tagore in the movie Kadambari (2015), which is a biopic on Kadambari Devi, the sister-in-law of Rabindranath Tagore. Parambrata added another feather in his cap with the 2016 movie Cinemawala which is a tribute to the single-screen cinema halls, which are becoming rare in India. The actor was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor - Bengali, while the film won five awards at the ceremony. In the same year, he was also seen in only his second Hindi movie, Traffic, directed byRajesh Pillai.

Parambrata`s 2016 movie Zulfiqar although opened to poor reviews, it was a success at the box office. In 2017, he appeared in his maiden Bangladeshi movie Bhuban Majhi directed by Fakhrul Arefeen Khan. He also starred in the romantic thriller Mandobasar Galpo (2017), directed by Tathagata Banerjee. In 2018, he starred in Hindi supernatural horror film Pari that also features Anushka Sharma and Ritabhari Chakraborty in lead roles. In 2019, he acted in films like Shahjahan Regency, Password, and Satyanweshi Byomkesh. Parambrata Chatterjee`s 2020 releases include Sraboner Dhara, Dwitiyo Purush, Bulbbul and Tiki-Taka.

As A Director
Entering the industry as an actor in 2002, Parambrata ventured into direction almost a decade later. In 2011, he directed the comedy movie Jiyo Kaka. A couple of years later, he directed the movie Hawa Bodol in which he starred as well. The movie that also features Raima Sen, Rudranil Ghosh, and Neha Panda opened to mixed reviews and is said to be inspired by the 2011 Hollywood movie The Change Up.

In 2015, he directed the movie Lorai: Play to Live starringProsenjit Chatterjee, Payel Sarkar, Indraadip Dasgupta, and Kanchan Mullick. The sports drama film that revolves around an alcoholic ex-football star, Sebastian Ryan (Prosenjit Chatterjee), who is assigned the task to train the youths living in the village of Purulia, received positive reviews from the critics and was a commercial success.
